How to select: Selecting the Right Tool is Key to Tool Performance

Single ring and double ring solutions are the most commonly used pre-stressing tool system today. However, in many cases these rather simple pre-stressing tools would not be sufficient to give the required die support in terms of compressive stress and stiffness. This will have a negative impact on tool performance and service life. Therefore, selecting the right tool system is the key to optimal tool performance and costs. The figure provides an overview of different pre-stressing tool systems and a guideline for selecting the right tool system. Product information on STRECON Vari-Fit and STRECON Dyna-Fit not included in the figure.

Pre-stressing of the Die Insert

Winding Core of Steel

Winding Core of Tungsten Carbide

Radial pre-stressing

The die is pre-stressed in radial direction by means of compressive stress distribution on the outer diameter of the die (i.e. reduced tangential stresses in the die).

The system is designed for longitudinal die and ring cracks.

Tool systems available:

STRECON® Basic Container, single ring, double ring

STRECON® LEAN Container (available now for individual design and order at www.strecon.com/online ordering)

In addition to radial pre-stressing, the tool system has a higher stiffness due to the carbide inner ring (= winding core). The stiffness reduces the stress-strain behaviour of the die, resulting also in less die deflection during process load.

The system is designed for longitudinal die cracks, dies with complex geometry and sharp corners.

Tool systems available: STRECON® E+ Container

Radial and axial pre-stressing

STRECON AXI-FIT

In addition to the radial pre-stressing, the die is pre-stressed in axial direction. In short, a two-directional die support is ensured during tool assembly.

The system is designed for transverse and horizontal die cracking, and split-die tool designs.

Tool systems available: STRECON® Axi-Fit Container. Single ring and double ring system with axial pre-stressing feature

In addition to radial and axial pre-stressing, the tool system has a higher stiffness that reduces the stress-strain behaviour of the die, resulting also in less die deflection during process load.

The system is designed for complex die geometry, tool designs suffering from transverse and horizontal die cracking, and split-die tool designs.
