Determination of the RAP Polishing Parameters and Sequence

Polishing is a value generating process like any other manufacturing operation. Adding more value means additional costs, and higher costs should contribute to better performance of the said workpiece and also reduced total cost of operation. However, when it comes to polishing, different opinions and standards exit the industry. Roughness levels of for example Ra 0.1-0.2 suits the necessities of some businesses, while others at least require Ra 0.05 or better. The RAP polishing machine tool offers a new and improved possibility to define an optimal set of polishing parameters and work process that matches the requirements of the company and their individual polishing jobs. For example, the operator can programme the polishing process in accordance with varying surface requirements of the workpiece like high loaded areas of a forging tool, or areas when a high pressure sliding contact is polished to a lower surface roughness than other areas of the same part.

Small Series and Larger Batches

Every workpiece material has a specific set of optimal RAP polishing parameters and sequence that depend on the hardness, base material structure, pre-machining process, and initial roughness level. The programming of the RAP process just takes a few minutes.

For small series production the polishing sequence is determined by a structured and interactive process between the operator (e.g. the skilled craftman) and the actual polishing process of the said workpiece. The polishing sequence is stored as a master file for that specific job, and this programme can easily be adjusted and further optimized. For larger batches or serial production the set of RAP polishing parameters can be optimized in a systematic engineering process by using test tools like flat discs, cylinders or shafts.
